No End to the Lies

Posted on November 3, 2012

The long nightmare ends on Tuesday.

You’ve heard of the gang that couldn’t shoot straight.  We have an organized crime syndicate in the White House that couldn’t tell the truth if their life depended on it.

But there’s a bigger problem. The disease is spreading to other agencies.  When Richard Nixon engaged in his notorious gambit of obstructing justice back in 1972, the viral infection was essentially concentrated within the White House and the Justice Department.

With the Benghazi Betrayal, contagion has stricken the State Department, the C.I.A. and the Pentagon.  This is unprecedented in our nation’s history.

I’ve mentioned in brief on earlier occasions that while ABC, NBC and MSNBC (which doesn’t even masquerade as a news entity anymore) have acted in collusion with the White House, CBS News and CNN have to one degree or another, been the outliers.  Fox News, for it’s part, has done its due diligence in looking for answers, from the very beginning of this travesty.

The sea change at CBS, has been the one for me that has been the most puzzling.  I reported to you the scathing rebuke of the Obama Administration delivered by Lara Logan, back on October 11th.  Since then, CBS – among the normal fellow travelers of the Obama regime, have been the most determined to reveal a factual narrative that contradicts the steady stream of lies and obfuscations of the White House, Pentagon and State Department.

Much of this transmutation of the journalistic DNA at CBS News has been accountable to two women.  One that I’ve already profiled is Ms. Logan.  The other is investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson.  She is an accomplished correspondent.  A short list of Ms. Attkisson’s experience and qualifications:

–Sharyl Attkisson was named CBS News’ investigative correspondent in August 2007.

  • Received an Investigative Emmy Award in 2009 for “Outstanding Investigative Reporting of a Business News Story” on TARP and subsequent bank bailouts.
  • Recently led CBS investigations into Solyndra, SpectraWatt, Beacon Power and additional Department of Energy loan guarantees.
  • One of the few journalists to have flown in a B-52 on a combat mission in Kosovo. She also flew in an F-15 fighter jet Combat Air Patrol flight.
  • Graduate of the University of Florida in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism.

Ms. Attkisson has been dogging the trail of the White House for more than a year now. In fact, in an interview with Laura Ingraham back on October 5th of last year, Ms. Attkisson noted that Justice Department officials ‘yelled and screamed’ at her in anger and indignation that she dare to persistently seek facts concerning the ‘Fast and Furious’ episode.

She went on to describe her interaction with Holder’s handlers:

“The White House and Justice Department will tell you that I’m the only reporter–as they told me–that is not reasonable. They say the Washington Post is reasonable, the LA Times is reasonable, the New York Times is reasonable, I’m the only one who thinks this is a story, and they think I’m unfair and biased by pursuing it.”

Translate the above to mean that Democrats have come to expect cooperation from the legacy media, not steadfast and diligent pursuit of the truth and that it just doesn’t work to have a basket full of lapdogs and one errant puppy behaving as if it hasn’t been properly potty trained.  Probably in their wildest dreams, they couldn’t imagine a reporter repeating the details of such a conversation.

Sharyl Attkisson has been on top of the Benghazi Betrayal since around October 4th. She has pursued every damning revelation in this case, including:

  • U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice falsely claiming that the attack was the result of a spontaneous demonstration sparked by anger at an anti-Islamic video produced in the United States.
  • The lack of vigilant security to protect important and sensitive Embassy documents. (Note: CNN and Washington Post reporters on scene have found all manner of key, critical documents and correspondence just laying about in easy availability to our enemies.)
  • The history of recent incidents just weeks prior to 9/11/12, that should have been huge Red flags to the State Department that more attacks were to be expected.
  • An interview with Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, which outlined how the State Department not only ignored multiple and urgent pleas for enhanced security, but even withdrew a highly qualified contingent of 34 counter terrorism security officers under Colonel Wood’s command.
  • A memo from the Regional Security Office in Libya, that according to CBS, compiled a running list of 230 security incidents through July 2012 in a memo that ultimately concluded that “the risk of U.S. Mission personnel, private U.S. citizens, or businesspersons encountering an isolating event as a result of militia or political violence is HIGH.”
  • The diplomatic cables from Ambassador Stevens warning the State Department of the violent atmosphere in Libya and Benghazi; in particular Stevens sent a “request for extension of tour of duty (TDY) personnel.” Additionally, six weeks before he died, Stevens requested “protective detail bodyguard potions,” saying the added guards “will fill the vacuum of security personnel currently at post who will be leaving with the next month and will not be replaced.”
  • Reports that surveillance drones were on scene for the entire duration of the incident, transmitting video to the White House and the Pentagon in real time.
  • Details on how assistance could have been provided that would have likely saved the lives of the ex-Navy Seal / Independent Contractor Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty seven hours after the attack commenced.

All of which leads us to the latest shoe to drop in this debacle. Ms. Attkisson, reporting just two days ago that CBS News has learned that during the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi, the Obama Administration did not convene its top interagency counterterrorism resource: the Counterterrorism Security Group, (CSG).

“The CSG is the one group that’s supposed to know what resources every agency has. They know of multiple options and have the ability to coordinate counterterrorism assets across all the agencies,” a high-ranking government official told CBS News. “They were not allowed to do their job. They were not called upon.”

By no means is any of this meant to minimize the excellent coverage of this disgrace by Fox News Investigative Reporter Catherine Herridge, who has been aggressive with this on a parallel track with Sheryl Attkisson.

The point here is that CBS News breaking from the solidarity of rest of the legacy media pack, is quite remarkable when taken in perspective of that network’s history of liberal bias.  For her part, Ms. Attkisson has been the target of intense hatred from the Left.

What accounts for the sea change? All I have seen in this regard, is some hostile speculation that CBS President Leslie Moonves is a Zionist and that he has loosed his Bloodhounds on the Obama administration in retaliation for Obama’s perceived adverse posture towards Israel.

The bottom line, from my perspective, is that if Obama fails in his bid to win a second term on November 6th, much of the credit for his takedown can be attributed to the new paradigm of independent, objective, reporting at CBS News.
