Mosques – Sanctuaries or breeding grounds of violence?

Editor’s note: This is the second in a three part series, focusing in on what is actually giving impetus to terror attacks in this country, such as we’ve seen in Boston, Ft. Hood, Garland, Texas, Chattanooga, Tennessee and most recently, San Bernardino, California. While Democrats complain that calling these killings Jihad, makes Muslims potential victims of retaliation, Islamic religious leaders are exhorting their congregants to rise up and slay more infidels. Today, we look at the nexus of Islamist sentiment in America.

With respect to the title of this column, I should make the distinction that the question, “Mosques – Sanctuaries or breeding grounds of violence?” could be answered either way, depending on the particular leadership of that facility and who controls the teaching, culture and message.  So, this outline is not arguing that every single mosque in America is sponsoring  seditious missives.  The argument that  I do make is that enough of them are, as to constitute a grave security threat that has to be seriously dealt with.

I recall the firestorm

that erupted back in 2010 when plans for a 15 story Islamic Center including a Mosque, were announced by the new owners of a plot of land located in the shadow of the fallen World Trade Center complex. It was dubbed the “Ground Zero Mosque” and an affront to the memory of the victims of 9/11. Opponents of the Mosque were cast as cranks and the Muslims as an oppressed and misunderstood minority.

The reality, however, is that resistance to the building of more Mosques in America is grounded in the awareness that Mosques are a primary security risk due to the nature of what is taking place within them. And what is taking place in a majority of them, is the preaching of sermons which incite resentment of and hatred towards both non-Muslims and in some instances, Muslims who are not sufficiently in conformance with the fundamentalist orthodoxy. The sermons are known to counter-terrorism experts as “Jihad Sermons”.

The Dar Al Hijrah mosque in Falls Church, Virginia is one example of the sort of foaming at the mouth denunciation of outsiders and provocation of terror mentality. In 2013, the Imam of Dar Al Hijrah, Sheik Shaker Elsayed told an audience of fellow muslims:

“Muslim men when it is a price to pay, they are first in line. They are the first in the prayer line. They are the first in the zakat (charity) line. They are the first in the hajj line. They are the first in the clean-up line. They are the first in the community-service line. They are the first in jihad line. They are the first in the da’wa line. But they are last if anything is being distributed, unless it is arms for jihad. We are the first to rush and run to defend our community and defend ourselves. The enemies of Allah are lining up; the question for us is, ‘Are we lining, or are we afraid because, because they may call us terrorists.’ Being called “terrorists” should not matter to Muslims because Muslims are being called terrorists anyway. You are a terrorist because you are a Muslim. Well give them a run for their money. Make it worth it. Make this title worth it, and be good a Muslim.”

The Mosque, has another interesting pedigree. Anwar al-Awlaki, who provided religious instruction to three of the 9/11 hijackers was the Imam at Dar al Hijrah Mosque from January 2001 until 2002. Awlaki’s teachings are still resonating among the purveyors of violence and hate worldwide.

Paul David Gaubatz, a U.S. State Department-trained Arabic linguist and former U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations Special Agent, investigated the activities of leaders and patrons of Mosques throughout America. Gaubatz, describes the materials he saw available at the Mosque’s bookstore:

One of the DVD’s and books I obtained was by an Islamic scholar Ahmad Sakr. Sakr travels the U.S. visiting Islamic schools and educates them in Sharia law. I have watched one of his videos in which he tells the young children our government is evil and not to follow the laws of our country and Americas government leaders will all go to hell. There were manuals informing the readers how to destroy America, and how to kill anyone who oppresses Islam. They are told how to obtain weapons, including weapons of mass destruction. Although all of the above is very disturbing and should (and actually is) against the law, the Muslim leaders of Falls Church are allowed by our government to indoctrinate the Muslim children into future violence against our country.

As Gaubatz and other researchers have discovered, tapes, video and transcripts of Jihad sermons from the leading proponents of Wahhabbism – the particular militant strain of Islam originating from Saudi Arabia, circulate around America. One such Imam, Siraj Wahhaj, presides at the Masjid At Taqwa in Brooklyn, New York. Wahhaj has told attendees:

“If Allah says 100 strikes, 100 strikes it is. If Allah says cut off their hand, you cut off their hand. If Allah says stone them to death, through the Prophet Muhammad, then you stone them to death, because it’s the obedience of Allah and his messenger—nothing personal.”

and –

“We don’t need to arm the people with 9mms and Uzis. You need to arm them with righteousness first. And once you arm them with righteousness first, then you can arm them. I will never tell people, ‘Don’t be violent.’ That’s not the Islamic way.”

These instructions to prepare for ‘Holy War’ are inextricably embedded in the general stream of religious instruction at these mosques. Notice that Wahhaj says, that a posture of non-violence is not a part of legitimate Islam. Not surprisingly, Wahhai was classified by the Justice Department as an “un-indicted person who may be alleged as co-conspirators” in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The Mosque is also the site of one of the hundreds of terrorist training venues nationwide.

The Clarion Project reports that investigators discovered the mosque has a “gun club” and its security team and some attendees have illegally procured weapons. The security team has been taught how to disarm law enforcement officers and the mosque’s martial arts classes have been attended by individuals convicted on terrorism charges.

Should one assume that such activities are the exception, a number of credible studies have determined otherwise. One important peer reviewed survey conducted by the Terrorism Research Initiative for the journal, Perspectives on Terrorism, summarized their findings as the following:

A random survey of 100 representative mosques in the U.S. was conducted to measure the correlation between Sharia adherence and dogma calling for violence against non-believers. Of the 100 mosques surveyed, 51% had texts on site rated as severely advocating violence; 30% had texts rated as moderately advocating violence; and 19% had no violent texts at all. Mosques that presented as Sharia adherent were more likely to feature violence-positive texts on site than were their non-Sharia-adherent counterparts. In 84.5% of the mosques, the imam recommended studying violence-positive texts. The leadership at Sharia-adherent mosques was more likely to recommend that a worshipper study violence-positive texts than leadership at non-Sharia-adherent mosques. Fifty-eight percent of the mosques invited guest imams known to promote violent jihad. The leadership of mosques that featured violence-positive literature was more likely to invite guest imams who were known to promote violent jihad than was the leadership of mosques that did not feature violence-positive literature on mosque premises.

Clearly, if one wishes to focus in on the source of motives behind terror attacks, whether it be here in America or anywhere else in the world, one cannot overlook the influence of extremist Muslims exhorting their followers to commit assault in the name of the Prophet and Allah.

It is also plainly apparent that a significant amount of these Jihad sermons are disseminated and consumed in the customary venue of the local mosque, although as we shall discover – not exclusively.

In the next in this series, we’ll look at a few more examples illustrating how Mosques in America are stimulating and guiding their most devout adherents to fulfill the commands of the Prophet to strike out in smoldering rage against the ‘kaffir’ or infidel.

Additionally, we’ll examine some other parts of the overall machinery of extremist indoctrination and the public relations strategy these mosques employ to deceive public officials and the news media as to their true agenda. We’ll conclude with a recommendation of what lawmakers need to do to pull the prayer rug out from under this whole seditious Trojan Horse in our midst and the deadly menace it animates.
